A Brief History of Fairview Cemetery
and
the Fairview Cemetery Association
Fairview Cemetery was created in 1854 when the land, part of the estate of William Strickland, under the terms of his will was named Fairview and designated as a public burying ground for Buchanan and the surrounding areas. The land is privately held meaning that the Town of Buchanan neither owns nor maintains the cemetery.
The original intention of creating a privately held cemetery was for each family to keep their plots mowed and trimmed. However, as families moved or passed away, it was obvious that this plan would not work. In 1942, the Fairview Cemetery Association was created to address this issue. The Association took on the responsibility for the upkeep of the grounds and the individual plots. The only duty of the Association is to raise the funds needed to keep our cemetery beautiful and to hire groundskeepers to do the work. The majority of the money needed to pay for this is raised through donations and (a very small percentage) through our annual Memorial Day Dinner.
